2022-08-16: Land iguanas breed again!
Galapagos National Park experts and scientific advisors have found that land iguanas of the species Conolophus subcristatu have returned to the wild after almost two centuries Multiply Santiago Island. Three years ago, 3,143 of these specimens were reintroduced with the aim of restoring the island's ecosystem. The team surveyed about 36 square kilometers and found new specimens of different ages, proving that this species is successfully reproducing. The iguanas were physically examined, weight and size were measured. The new individuals were tagged for later identification. The ecological restoration of the island of Santiago, one of the largest in the archipelago, began in 2002 with the implementation of the "Isabela Project", which promoted the eradication of goats and pigs. Over the years, the ecosystem began to recover. This set the stage for the establishment of a population of land iguanas, the same species as the locally extinct one.
